IN PRINT
It's shaping up to be a great year for W. A. author Greg Egan. "Cocoon",
has been nominated for a Hugo Award. (This is the first Australian
fiction to be nominated for a Hugo.) Egan's novel, PERMUTATION CITY
came a close second to Iain Banks' FEERSUM ENDJINN in this year's Britist
Science Fiction Association Awards. In addition, an advert for the Science
Fiction Bookclub, in the March 1995 Discover, led with a full column
review of Egan's novel Quaranteen.
Not to be outdone, ex-W. A. fan and co-editor of FTT, Judith Hanna, has an
article on the costing of carbon dioxide emissions, in the April 29th New
Scientist.
New and upcoming Australian releases include Julie Haydon's LINES UPON THE
SKY (Pan, June) and Sara Douglass' U part one of The Axis trilogy
(Harper Collins, July). HarperCollins have announced a new F&SF line
Moonstone, the first three books being SABRIEL Garth Nix, AURORA Sally
Odgers and a reprint of Cherry Wilder's THE LUCK OF BRIN'S FIVE.
Steve Paulsen reports Paul Collins has sold a children's fantasy novel
called THIS SPELLS TROUBLE to Angus and Robertson. Paul Collins' anthology
STRANGE FRUIT will be published in July 1995 by Penguin books. It contains
stories by Thomas Shapcott, Garry Disher, Morris Lurie, Rick Kennett,
Robert Hood, James McQueen, Nancy Cato, Richard Lunn, Michael Wilding,
Dorothy Porter, Jack Wodham, Cherry Wilder, Steven Paulsen, Kaaron Warren,
Lucy Sussex and Carmel Bird.
The new UK prozine Beyond has purchased stories by Paul Collins, Paul
Collins & Jack Wodhams, Shane Dix, Sherry-Anne Jacobs, Rick Kennett,
Steve Paulsen, Dirk Strasser and Sean Willams. (Several of the stories
have already seen print here.)
Stephen Dedman has sold "Tour de Force" to Asimov's SF.
Robert Hood has sold "A Quickening in Stone" to Aboriginal SF.
Alex Shockley has sold "Sheet" to the Magazine of Fantasy & SF.
" Wang's Carpets" by Greg Egan will appear in NEW LEGENDS 2 edited
Greg Bear.
Rick Kennet's short story "Bottle Green Dreams" will be included in the
1995 Datlow and Windling recommended reading list.
Steve Paulsen's and Sean McMullen's "The Hunt for Australian Horror"
(Aurealis #14 ) will be updated by Bill Congreve and published in
THE SCREAM FACTORY in the USA.

CONVENTION UPDATES
The 1995 Media NatCon has passed over to Ian Gunn and Karen Pender-Gunn.
It will be called BASICON. It keeps the Condiment date. Venue tba. See
the attached ASFMA nomination form.
The Australian Horror Society have announced their first convention
TERROR 95, THE ANTI-CON with several guests, including Richard Harland.
Future NatCons might note that it will have been three years since there
has been an Australian author as a GoH at a local NatCon. In the past ten
years, only three Australian authors have been honoured at the NatCon, Lee
Harding 1985; Sean McMullen 1992; Kate Orman 1994. Given the state of
Australian sf isn't it time for a little more recognition of our own
authors?
AUSTRALIA IN '99, the 1999 WorldCon bid, has finally produced a newsletter
for pre-suppporting members here in Australia. It is called Platypussary
and is available to all pre-supporting members in Australia.
